Course Description:
Hazardous Materials Incident Commanders are trained to manage hazardous materials emergencies beyond those handled by First Responders. Upon arrival at the scene, they formally assume command from the first responder, who should have already established a working ICS (Incident Command System) and will serve as the interim Incident Commander.
The Hazardous Materials Incident Commander (HMIC) course provides the tools needed to assume control of an emergency response to a hazardous materials incident. It focuses on the legal and practical requirements for safely and competently managing a hazardous materials incident. Instructional methods include class activities, case studies, and tabletop exercises, with an emphasis on hands-on decision-making.
OSHA requires Hazardous Materials Incident Commanders to be trained in accordance with section (q) of the HAZWOPER regulation. The total hourly requirement for Hazardous Materials Incident Commanders is 24 hours. When combined with the prerequisites, this 16-hour class will bring the student up to the 24-hour training requirement.
