Course Description:
This course introduces the roles and responsibilities of a firing boss (FIRB), common firing devices, and general firing operations and techniques. Although comprehensive in nature, the coursework is not a substitute for the dynamic fire environment. The course provides students with important information concerning general tasks required to be successful. Any opportunity to show students a small prescribed burn or demonstrate how devices operate in the field will promote transferring these new skills to the job.
If you have not been in a class with Chief Jeff Brand then you don’t know what you’re missing. Sign up now to further your fire service educational experience. Chief Brand will provide you with the necessary skill sets to improve your abilities through numerous live firing devices for the Wildland Urban Interface Firefighting. This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to use fire in the correct manner and application as a tactical consideration.
VERY IMPORTANT: The firing day will be determined by the instructor after evaluation of the current and predicted weather conditions within the burn plan. Firing is NOT guaranteed, personnel safety will be the determining factor!
Students will participate in a firing exercise, with instructor guidance/mentoring. So please bring the following PPE’s with you on the designated firing day: Helmet, fire shelter, eye protection, brush gloves, nomex jacket, pants, work boots (no open toe or tennis shoes allowed), no short pants.
Please bring a laptop computer with USB port you to class each day. Student materials will be on flash-drives.
